Earlier today, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the International Olympic Committee announced that the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will be postponed to 2021 to ensure the safety of people across the world.

The only times the Olympic Games was ever cancelled / postponed was during 1916, 1940, and 1944 — during the world wars.

Despite the postponement, the Summer Olympics will still be called the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. The Olympic flame will also remain displayed in Fukushima.

“The IOC president and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community,” said a joint statement by the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee and the IOC.
