Through a program launched in Bali called Greener Nusantara, Starbucks Indonesia began the initiative to use paper instead of plastic straws since October 1, 2018.
In September 2019, the program was also launched in three other Indonesian regions, namely Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara; Labuan Bajo in East Nusa Tenggara; and Bandung in West Java.
The program is expected to reduce more than 30 million plastic straws annually.

Starbucks Indonesia has also launched other initiatives to reduce disposable cup usage, namely For Here Glass for beverages consumed in the outlet and Bring Your Own Tumbler to encourage coffee lovers to bring their own tumblers while buying coffee.
“As part of the community, we strive to support the government’s programs and movements, including the current effort to reduce plastic waste in Indonesia,” said Anthony Cottan, director of the brand’s franchise holder in Indonesia, Sari Coffee Indonesia.
