This comes after an intense weekend filled with rumours and speculation of a change in the Malaysian government.
In a tweet posted on his official Twitter account, a press release confirms his resignation, detailing that his resignation letter was sent to the King of Malaysia at 1pm local time.
The former premier was in power for a total of 655 days.
